All you must do is join IRCSSA. When you do you will be issued a combination Sail/Member number. The number should be installed on all vessels owned by the member. |
A surface sailer has no keel. Rather, it is guided by its wheels or runners with no slippage. More of the energy in the sail is converted into forward motion. |
It’s easy and free to join. Just fill out the Member Application Form and mail it in. |

Frequently Asked Questions |
A surface sailer is a vessel that is sailed ON the surface of land or ice. A conventional sailboat sails with a part of the boat, the keel, under the surface. It is the keel that resists slippage sideways when wind is pressed against the sail. Much of the energy in the sail is absorbed in that slippage. |

You can purchase a yacht or a kit to assemble, from a vendor listed in these web pages. Or you can build a yacht yourself. If you need to learn how, you can join and participate in our Yahoo! discussion group and ask questions. Other members will be glad to answer any questions you can come up with. There’s a link to the group on the front page. |

If I don’t have a surface sailer how do I get one? |
You don’t have to. You can create your own racing rules. Only when you want to compete with other IRCSSA members in an official IRCSSA sanctioned race, will you have to abide by IRCSSA rules. |
